Getting started with dry herb vaporizers — and where to go deeper

New to dry herb vaporizers, or just dialing in your setup? Start with the basics below, then join the community over at The Round Table for honest, hands-on device reviews.

Getting Started

A simple, practical guide to help you choose the perfect vaporizer for your lifestyle — torch-powered, battery-powered, or desktop.

What Is a Dry Herb Vaporizer?

Dry herb vaporizers heat your herb to the point where active compounds are released as vapor — not smoke. This creates smoother, more flavorful sessions and reduces harsh byproducts from combustion. There are three main categories: thermal extraction devices (torch or induction-powered), battery-powered portables, and desktop vaporizers.

Portable Thermal Extraction Devices (TEDs)

Thermal Extraction Devices use external heat — like a butane torch or induction heater — to warm a metal tip or cap that vaporizes the herb. These are fully mechanical systems with no batteries or electronics, designed for durability and efficiency.

  • Ultra-efficient: Small loads go a long way.
  • Instant heat-up: Ready in seconds.
  • No electronics: Nothing to charge or replace.
  • Durable: All-metal, long-lasting design.

Tips for Use:

  • Rotate evenly while heating the cap to prevent hotspots.
  • Allow cooling between hits to avoid scorching the herb.
  • Keep caps, tips, and screens clean for smooth, flavorful vapor.

Battery-Powered Portable Vaporizers

Battery-powered portables use conduction, convection, or hybrid heating methods. They’re self-contained and easy to use — just pack, power on, and enjoy. Ideal for those who want convenience, consistency, and modern control.

  • Precision control: Adjustable temperatures for full customization.
  • Consistent performance: Great for on-demand sessions.
  • Portable design: Compact and discreet.
  • Flavorful vapor: Excellent balance of taste and density.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Grind fine for conduction models, slightly coarser for convection.
  • Start on lower temperatures for flavor, increase for fuller extraction.
  • Clean ovens, vapor paths, and mouthpieces regularly to maintain airflow.

Desktop Vaporizers

Desktop vaporizers plug directly into the wall and deliver powerful, consistent vapor. They’re best for stationary use, offering exceptional performance for longer sessions or group sharing.

  • Superior vapor quality: Pure convection heating for smooth draws.
  • Powerful and consistent: Perfect for extended sessions.
  • Flexible setup: Balloon or whip delivery options.
  • No charging required: Always ready when you are.

Tips:

  • Clean whips, tubing, and screens often for clean taste.
  • Use medium grind for even airflow.
  • Pair with a bubbler or water piece for smoother vapor.

Quick Tips for Best Performance

Designing your own tray

Our Tray Designer lets you lay out a custom sesh tray to exact, real-world scale — then join the waitlist and we build it. No payment up front; we reach out to finalize and quote.

  1. Set your tray. Choose a size (or tap a preset) and pick a Rectangle, Circle, or a custom outline. Switch between inches and millimeters anytime.
  2. Add your gear. Click pieces from the Accessories list — grinders, jars, vapes, tools. Every piece is drawn to its real dimensions, so what you see is true to scale.
  3. Upload your own shape. Don't see a piece we list? Use Upload your own shape and pick a single-outline SVG. It drops onto the tray at its real size for you to place and resize.
  4. Arrange & size. Drag to move, grab the top handle (or use the Rotation field) to turn, and set exact dimensions in the Selected panel. Snap-to-grid keeps things aligned.
  5. Join the waitlist. When your layout looks right, click "Join the waitlist with this design." We'll get your layout, reach out to finalize the details, and give you a quote.

SVG tip: for both custom tray outlines and uploaded shapes, export a single clean outline — one closed path, no text or fills — from your design tool. That's what carves cleanly.
